Who can join?

The band is open to anyone in the Scout or Guide Association aged 8 and over. Under 14s must be a member of Cubs/Scouts/Brownies/Guides, however over 14s may join the Band's explorer unit, and over 18s can join as Active Support, so band rehersals become your 'Scouting night'.

What ensembles can I join?

The band has a variety of different ensembles - including our Marching Band, Concert Band, Merlins Training Band, Dance Band and a Saxophone Quartet

Our main concert and marching band is aimed at players Grade 1/2 upwards, although this is only a guide as we do not audition. Everyone is immediately part of the main band and can take part in engagements regardless of whether they attend Spitfires or Merlins.

The Dance Band and Saxophone Quartet are made up of experienced players, usually by invitation.

When and where do you rehearse?

The main Spitfires band rehearses every Thursday evening from 18:30 - 21:00. We appreciate that this is late for younger members, so members are able to leave early if they wish.

The Merlins Training Band meets on alternate Friday evenings in term time from 18:30 - 19:45.

The Corps of Drums, Dance Band and Saxophone Quartet have rehearsals on Friday evenings, Saturday afternoons and Sundays.

All rehearsals are held at our headquarters - 14th Eastleigh Scout HQ, Allbrook Hill, Allbrook, Eastleigh, SO50 4LY. Click here to view a map.

Please send us an enquiry if you want to find out when the next rehearsal is.

What if I have never played before?

You don't need to have any previous experience or be able to play an instrument to join us.

Our 'Merlins' Training Band is aimed at beginner players, where some of our young leaders and helpers will provide help and tuition on your instrument. All Merlins members are still encouraged to attend main band engagements.

I don't have my own instrument, is that a problem?

We have a stock of band instruments if you don't have your own, although obviously it does depend on what is in the store at the time! Our instruments are also loaned for free.

Do I have to pay or buy uniform?

All uniform is provided, except for band parade shoes which need to be purchased yourself. However the band does sell second hand shoes and buys them back once small feet outgrow them!

Although the band is usually completely self funded, in quietier years or years when we expand, we do ask for a small subscription.
